A Real Deal

A wonderful new recording by 70s Detroit jazz legend Doug Hammond -- best known for his 70s work on the Tribe Records label, but sounding equally great here on a recent set of duets with pianist Kirk Lightsey! The sound is relatively spare, but extremely spiritual -- with Lightsey on piano and Hammond on drums and sanza (kalimba), plus vocals -- the latter of which are a really wonderful discovery! Doug sings in a style that's somewhere between Joe Lee Wilson and Eddie Jefferson -- the deeper tones of the former, but some of the freer energy of the latter -- although always in a relatively righteous mode overall. The approach is quite poetic, but also filled with life and as much inherent rhythm as Hammond's work on drums -- and although the instrumentation on the record is minimal, the sound itself is quite rich -- and recorded with a quality that would be right at home in the older Tribe Records catalog. Titles include "We People", "A Tear", "We Together/Struttin In", "Real Deal", "From Spirits/Vain X/Placement", "Rizz Biz", "Moves", and "Dope Of Power Suite (Four Tet club mix)"
